Ce type de verre subit un traitement thermique de renforcement qui permet d’augmenter fortement sa résistance aux différentes contraintes mécaniques et thermiques. La différence de température supportée peut aller jusqu’à 200°C. Si le verre vient à se briser, il se fragmente en petits morceaux non coupants afin de réduire les risques de blessures profondes.

Il se compose de deux ou plusieurs feuilles de verre assemblées avec un ou plusieurs films plastiques (PVB) ou de résines. Un traitement thermique sous pression permet de réaliser une adhérence parfaite. Une fois trempé, le verre feuilleté ne peut plus être coupé, façonné, scié ou percé. Si le vitrage vient à se casser, les films PVB retiennent les fragments de verre en place. Il est possible de modifier les caractéristiques des verres feuilletés. En effet, les films PVB peuvent être clairs, opalins ou même parfois colorés.
